Deloitte's Hellwalker - Staff & Client Fundraising
42 brave executives from the elite of Bristol's corporate finance community signed up to take part in Deloitte and Touche's mysterious Hellwalker weekend, after receiving an intriguing invitation that simply asked ‘dare you accept our latest challenge?'. Although participants had no clue what the weekend would entail, Deloitte's Bristol and Cardiff team are renowned for their extreme annual fundraising weekend, so they knew that this top-secret event for Meningitis UK wouldn't be easy!
Once the flights had been booked there was no turning back and participants found out the Hellwalker challenge certainly did live up to its name. After meeting at Bristol Airport at dawn, the teams learnt that they would be transported to the surprise destination of the wild Wicklow Mountains, just south of Dublin. On arrival, the hearty Irish breakfast they received was a smokescreen for what lay ahead, as shortly afterwards they would be deserted in the middle of nowhere and informed that a bus would be waiting for them in 30 hour's time at a location 40 miles away! They would have to hike and cycle their way to the base-camp, and master skills such as kayaking and abseiling to get them over the rugged Irish landscape. All-in-all, the course demanded them to climb over 16,000ft - equivalent to the height of the tallest peak in the Rockies - and navigate through rough terrain, all with no sleep!
With this knowledge in mind, the adrenaline was understandably pumping as the aeroplane touched down in Dublin on the day of the challenge, and not even the thundering rain could dampen their spirits. Soaked to the skin, teams ploughed on through the terrible conditions with exceptionally good camaraderie, taking on mountains as though they were molehills and always stopping for a smile whenever a camera appeared. Wicklow was truly wild, and the lack of walking trails led to quite a few off-road detours adding more miles to the journey, but everyone made it back to base camp, albeit in varying states of disarray.
All those aches and bruises were worth it, as these courageous men and women from Deloitte, Barclays, Burges Salmon, Growth Capital, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, Mezzanine Management, Osborne Clarke, Royal Bank of Scotland and TLT raised a massive £40,000, and we are incredibly grateful to them for going to such extreme lengths to support our Search 4 a Vaccine.
