The BIG Climb
Mount Kilimanjaro Trek
Date: 12th – 22nd January 2012
Congratulations to everyone who took part in Meningitis UK’s first Big Climb challenge up Kilimanjaro. So far we have raised £18,000, which is fantastic! We’d like to thank everyone for their support and effort. Well done!
You can view photos from the trip in our Big Climb photo gallery.
During the six-day climb our BIG climb team made their way through a variety of diverse terrains, from jungle to volcanic craters, as they headed towards the picturesque snow-capped Uhuru peak. Our team climbed 5,895 metres to reach the summit of the world's highest free-standing mountain on the 20th January.
Meningitis UK has teamed up with specialist challenge events organiser, Action Challenge, to create this event, which followed the Lemosho route to the summit. This is one of the newer routes on the mountain and has a high summit success rate coupled with a low volume of people and beautiful scenery as it takes in some of the best features of the Kilimanjaro National Park.
Join us for the trip of a lifetime next year
Interested in taking part in a charity challenge? Then come and join us next year on our next Big Climb up Kilimanjaro.
This is an excellent way to bring groups of employees, friends and families together to share what promises to be a once in a lifetime experience. As a bespoke challenge, it also provides a great opportunity to make new friends and meet likeminded in support of a great cause.
For more information on this amazing challenge please contact our Events Fundraiser Liz Gough on 0117 303 3343 or lizgough@meningitisUK.org.

Mick Scannell trekked to Everest Base Camp to raise funds for Meningitis UK. Mick is raising money in memory of close family friend Mike Reilly, who sadly died from meningitis. Mick has the following to say about the Trek: "Well, what an amazing experience! Yaks, Sherpas, landslides, wild dogs, snow, wind, rain, hail, sun. When we had sight of Everest we all got excited and took lots of photos. I then got really sad and asked why Michael couldn't have been there to see it instead of me? But knowing that I was raising money for Meningitis UK's Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign kept me going. The trek was completely brilliant, with all my senses on high alert, taking in Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags, stupas and monuments, not to mention the exhaustion!"

Michelle Worsfold travelled all the way to China to trek the Great Wall, to raise money for Meningitis UK. Michelle is raising money in memory of a family member's little boy James, who lost his life to meningitis on Christmas Day 2004. Like many of our supporters, Michelle recognises the importance of Meningitis UK's vaccine development research, and is determined to fundraise as much as she can for our cause. Michelle had an amazing time on her trip: "I've never done anything like this before and the trek was a fantastic experience. I trained as much as I could in preparation, doing local walks and going to the gym. I do lots of cycling anyway to keep fit, and my son Bradley comes along behind me in his little trailer. The encouragement of my friends and family kept me going, it was so important to do this in memory of James." |
If you love the idea of a challenge, but for whatever reason you are unable to undertake one for us, you could always advertise these challenges in your local area to encourage others to fundraise for us. Schools, churches, Rotary clubs, youth clubs, sports clubs, sports stores, shops etc can all be amenable to charity advertising. You can download posters advertising the challenges below, or telephone Liz Gough on 0117 303 3343 if you have any difficulties.
