Meninges showring cerebrospinal fluidMeningitis is caused when the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord - known as the meninges - become inflamed, usually as a result of an infection.

This infection is usually caused by viruses or bacteria, but can be caused by a fungal infection or by other pathogens. It may also develop following a serious injury to the head or spine.

Learn more about the difference between viral and bacterial meningitis below.

Bacterial meningitis

Someone suffering from bacterial meningitis needs to be treated with antibiotics immediately. The sooner effective treatment is given, the more likely a person is to make a full recovery. Knowing the symptoms and acting fast can save lives.

Viral meningitis

Although viral meningitis can make you feel very unwell, treatment is usually rest and pain killers and most people tend to make a full recovery within two-weeks without being admittted to hospital.
