Volunteer to take part in the lactamica study

Who are we?

We are a group of researchers in the medical school at the University of Sheffield who study meningitis.

What?

This research project aims to prove that people who carry a harmless bacterium called Neisseria lactamica bacteria do not also carry the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria which causes meningitis.

How?

We are recruiting 300 people half of whom will have N.lactamica administered into the nose. We will then see if this excludes infection with N.meningitidis over six months.

Where?

The research project is being run from the Clinical Research Facility, 0 floor in Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

When?

This project will start in Mid October 2011 and run for six months.

What is in it for you?

You would be taking part in a research project which seeks to find new ways to prevent meningitis. £120 will be offered to compensate for the time and inconvenience involved in taking part.

To find out more please read the patient information sheet and the inclusion / exclusion criteria to see if you are eligible for the study. If you would like to take part please contact lactamicastudy@sth.nhs.uk or phone the clinical research facility on 0114 271 3339
