Bath shoppers urged to sign up for Time 4 Tea

17.08.11

TEA and cake lovers were urged to brew and bake next month at the launch of a tasty fundraising initiative in Bath on Friday.

September's the time to get creative in the kitchen for Bristol-based charity, Meningitis UK's latest event – Time 4 Tea.

Celebrity cake-maker and best-selling cookery writer Mary Berry has put forward her favourite cake recipe – Ginger and Treacle Spiced Traybake – to encourage everyone to indulge in some culinary action.

All sorts of tasty tea-themed events are possible, from tea dances to teddy bears' picnics and the Time 4 Tea fundraising team were in the SouthGate Shopping Centre in Bath on August 12 to encourage local people to get involved.

Members of the public will be tempted with tea-themed treats and quizzes and armed with all the information they need to throw their own fundraising event.

Community fundraiser Emily Mitchard said: "The concept has already grabbed people's attention and we've had some really fun suggestions, from a Mad Hatter's Tea party to a bake-off and cake quiz!

"We are here in Bath today to launch the event and to stir up some excitement.

"We've got a fundraising pack jam-packed with tips and ideas to get people started. Everyone will receive Mary's delicious Ginger and Treacle Spiced Traybake recipe so sign up now and make Time 4 Tea this autumn."

Money raised from Time 4 Tea will go towards Meningitis UK's Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign which funds cutting-edge research to find a vaccine to eradicate all forms of the disease.

Mary, who is appearing as a judge on BBC 1's Great British Bake-off later in the year, said: "Meningitis is the disease which parents fear most. As a mother and a grandmother, to find a vaccine which would protect future generations would be a wonderful achievement, which is why I'm honoured to be supporting Time 4 Tea.

"It promises to be a fun and easy way to raise money, and an ideal opportunity to get together with friends, family or colleagues. Meningitis UK has lots of ideas to get you started so why not dust off your teapot and get thinking about what to brew and bake for the occasion."

Party balloons, colourful bunting and a selection of Twinings tea samples will be sent to anyone who registers for a tea party pack with invitations, a collection box and a fundraiser's guide featuring Mary Berry's cake recipe.

A range of delicious new cupcake recipes kindly provided by Country Cupcakes are also available on the charity's website www.meningitisuk.org/time4tea
