Bristol builders help protect future generations
A FUND to help the families of Bristol builders is giving an £8,000 boost to ground-breaking vaccine research to help stamp out meningitis.
Colin Johnson of the Federation of Master Builders suggested Kingswood-based Meningitis UK as one of seven charities to benefit from the organisation's benevolent fund, after he lost his grandson Ryan to the disease in 2010.
Ryan from Downend, was struck down with meningitis and sadly died on April 13 2010, aged three.
Colin said: "Meningitis UK was chosen having experienced the loss of my youngest grandson, Ryan Johnson. We all know how deadly meningitis is and look forward to the day when the charity succeeds in its hard work for a total cure against all forms of the disease."
The benevolent fund was originally set up with profits made from local authority work to help builders' families if they were injured, unable to work or if they should die.
It was recently agreed that the remaining sum should be distributed to local charities as it was not earning much interest in today's financial climate.
The other charities to benefit from the fund are: Paul's Place, Coalpit Heath, Bristol, the Starfish Pool Appeal, Bristol Community Transport, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and Clevedon Community Hospital.
