Cycling for a vaccine

13.07.11

TWO devoted Bristol fundraisers are taking on a gruelling 56-mile bike ride to help eradicate a disease which they have seen destroy so many lives.

Inspired by the grit and determination of many supporters who take on challenges for Downend-based Meningitis UK, the charity's own fundraising champions - Toya Champ, 25, and Laura Bullock, 27 - are using pedal power to raise vital funds.

They are keeping their fingers crossed for sunshine on Sunday (July 17) when they take on the Great Weston Ride which sets off from the Long Ashton Park and Ride, finishing to views of waves on Weston Seafront.

Laura said: "Everyday I am humbled by our amazing supporters, many of whom have tragically lost loved ones to this disease or who have battled to survive meningitis.

"We are cycling in celebration of the people who support us every year and to raise money to eradicate this potential killer.

"I am not very sporty so this is a big personal challenge and I am proud to be riding for Meningitis UK."

Both fundraisers have been putting in the hours cycling around Bristol in preparation for the British Cycling challenge.

Toya said: "I cannot wait to get on my bike and ride for Meningitis UK. This promises to be a fantastic day and the thought of our dedicated supporters will spur me on every time I am faced with a steep hill.

"Meningitis does not discriminate, it can affect anyone and I am reminded of the devastation of this disease every day at work, which is what inspired me take on this challenge.

"I hope people can support us for Meningitis UK- a charity which is fighting to stamp out this disease completely."

All the money raised from Toya and Laura's cycle ride will go towards Meningitis UK's Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign. It aims to raise £7million to fund vital research into developing a vaccine to protect against all forms of meningitis.

Successful vaccines exist against some forms of meningitis, including Hib, Meningitis C and pneumococcal meningitis but there is still no vaccine for Meningitis B, which is the most common strain in this country.

Steve Dayman, who founded Meningitis UK after his son Spencer died from the disease, said: "Toya and Laura's efforts are admirable and I know they have been gearing up to do the Great Weston Ride for a while.

"Working as fundraisers at Meningitis UK, they know only too well the pain and suffering this disease can cause and the whole team is proud of their efforts.

"Every penny raised through the cycle ride will go towards our single focus – to find a vaccine to eradicate meningitis. Our ultimate goal is to spare people the heartache of losing a loved one to the disease."

Laura organised Meningitis UK's annual Summer Stroll from Keynsham to Ashton Gate in June which saw around 200 supporters raise more than £15,000 towards vaccine research.

Many of the walkers will be at the charity's annual summer party at the Tobacco Factory in Bristol on Thursday August 18. All are invited to this free event with live entertainment and fun activities for all the family. Contact emilymitchard@meningitisUK.org to book tickets.
