Dad's 130 mile bike ride to celebrate Evie

20.05.11

COVENTRY dad Craig Browning hoped little Evie's first Father's Day would be a memorable one.

But it became a nightmare the family will never forget.

Eight-month-old Evie ended up fighting for her life after being struck down by the brain bug meningitis.

After being given emergency treatment on the floor at her Foleshill home she was rushed to three different hospitals within 24 hours as doctors battled to save her.

So after Evie made a remarkable recovery dad Craig decided to cycle 130 miles to Skegness to raise money to save other victims.

He said: "We wanted to do something to help because we didn't know much about meningitis before.

"We could easily have put it down to the fact Evie was teething and not done anything until it was too late."

Craig and partner Gemma Curran had already noticed Evie was unusually clingy.

But the 19-year-old couple only realised something was seriously wrong when she woke up screaming and could not swallow.

They immediately called NHS Direct, who sent a car to take her to A&E. Evie's condition deteriorated so quickly that when the driver arrived he had to give her antibiotics on the living room floor.

Mum Gemma said: "He found a spot on her chest and when he pushed that it exploded into a giant rash.

"After that everything happened so fast, I was terrified. There was blood and water everywhere.

"We had to be put on antibiotics too. They turned everything orange – even our tears."

By the time Evie arrived at University Hospital a team of 20 doctors and nurses were waiting to begin lifesaving treatment."
