Family and friends in charity walk for Mark

23.05.11

A MEMORIAL walk around Brixworth Country Park in Northampton raised funds for Meningitis UK at the weekend.

Family and friends of Mark Tanton completed a seven-mile tribute walk around the park in his memory, on Saturday. The former Campion School pupil, from Flore, was only 14 when he died in September after contracting a rare strain of meningitis.

The sponsored walk was the idea of one of Mark's former school friends, 15-year-old Kieran Crick, and more than 30 people took part.

The event also included a raffle and tombola and has so far raised more than £150 for Meningitis UK, with more funds still to come in.

Mark's Dad, John Tanton, said: "When Kieran came to us to tell us about his idea for the walk we were very touched. We thought it was a lovely idea.

"The park and Pitsford Water was somewhere Mark went a lot when he was little with the family, and we would cycle round on our bikes. He also cycled around it with Scouts and the Northants Tri-club, It was one of his favourite haunts so it was a fitting place to have the walk."

He added: "It was a nice day to remember him and also to raise funds and awareness for the Meningitis UK charity.

"Everybody who took part, and those who helped, all enjoyed it."
