Lincoln family smashes huge fundraising milestone

27.07.11

THE family of a toddler from Lincoln who died from meningitis has smashed the £100,000 fundraising milestone in support of vaccine research.

Dylan Stott sadly passed away from the deadly brain bug when he was 21-months-old, just hours after showing nothing more than flu-like symptoms.

Quentin and Surj, from Coleby with help from many friends and family members have now raised nearly £105,000 for Meningitis UK since their toddler died in August 2005.

On Mother's Day this year, Surj ran the Lincoln 10k marathon cheered on by their three daughters – Paige, 20, eight-year-old India and Ruby, aged two.

Fundraising events have included collections, raffles, a summer ball which brought in £20,000 and Quentin and his friend Kevin Temple taking on the amazing personal challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa's highest peak to raise £56,000.

Surj said: "Losing Dylan was every parent's worst nightmare. It happened so quickly.

"Fundraising has kept Dylan's memory alive as well as helping to raise awareness of meningitis.

"We have managed to raise so much thanks to the continuous support of family and friends - they're the ones who are always making donations and it doesn't matter what we do, people are still willing to support our fundraising.

"The last event we held was my 40th birthday party when I asked for donations to Meningitis UK instead of gifts. It was a happy event and I spoke about Dylan, keeping him in our thoughts.

"I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us get past the £100,000 mark."

Customers of the Stotts who run Reflex Gaming, also hold a annual golf day which brings in about £1,000 each year.

Meningitis UK Chief Executive Steve Dayman, who founded Meningitis UK after his son Spencer died from the disease, said: "We're really grateful to Quentin and Surj for supporting Meningitis UK and for smashing the £100,000 mark which is such an amazing achievement.

"After their recent fantastic donations the total raised in memory of Dylan has shot up past the £100,000 to £104,287! This is truly remarkable and we really appreciate their continuous support.

"We would not be able to keep making such essential steps forward in the fight against meningitis without their continued help and support."

Dylan's photo was used on a poster issued by Meningitis UK for its 'Look Out 4 Meningitis last winter for the Look Out 4 Others' winter awareness campaign, which warns people to look out for each other during the cold weather.

Meningitis UK's Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign aims to raise £7million to fund vital research into developing a vaccine against all forms of meningitis.
