Meningitis UK comment on inquest of Weston toddler

COMMENT FROM MENINGITIS UK

Steve Dayman, the chief executive of Meningitis UK, lost his own son Spencer to meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in 1982.

He said: "I was extremely saddened to hear about Lucas's tragic death and would like to pass on my deepest sympathies to his family.

"Meningitis and septicaemia are notoriously difficult to diagnose and can kill in hours.

"It is important for health professionals to make sure they are aware of the signs of the diseases and the clinical guidelines. Regular observation of indicators such as temperature is paramount.

"We are fighting back against meningitis and associated diseases and we hope it will give people comfort to know that our researchers are working hard to develop preventative vaccines to save lives."

Meningitis UK is dedicated to funding vaccine research to eradicate all forms of the disease through its Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign.

The charity is offering the public free symptoms information packs to help raise awareness. These include a leaflet with all the facts and frequently asked questions, plus a 'Check the Symptoms' fridge magnet and a handy wallet-sized symptoms card.
