Miss Bristol hits the streets to beat meningitis

17.11.10

MISS Bristol City will be one of over 80 collectors on Saturday as people take to the streets to raise money to help beat meningitis.

Madison CottellMadison Cottell is lending her support to Meningitis UK after the sudden and tragic death of 16-year-old Clifton College student Ryan Bresnahan in March.

She will be joined by the charity's supporters plus students from the University of the West of England, Bath University and Birmingham University.

All money collected from festive shoppers will go towards Meningitis UK's Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign to find a vaccine to eradicate all forms of meningitis.

Madison, who is studying fashion design at UWE, is preparing for the final of Miss Great Britain in Weston-super-Mare on December 4.

The 19-year-old said: "While I didn't know Ryan personally, some of my friends knew him and a lot of my neighbours know his family.

"I was quite affected by how sudden his death was and shocked that it could happen at such a young age.

"I'm really looking forward to Saturday and see it as an opportunity to raise awareness and money in memory of Ryan."

Participants will be stationed throughout the city from 9am until 5pm.

The annual collection is held in memory of Spencer Dayman, from Alveston, who died in 1982 from meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia at just 14-months-old.

His father, the charity's Chief Executive Steve Dayman, has been raising funds to help beat the deadly disease ever since.
