AN award-winning hairdresser swapped blow-drying for bicycles when she pedalled 300 miles across Vietnam to raise money for a charity very close to her heart.
When Susan Hall's son, Marshall, was six years old he almost died after contracting meningitis. Now aged 19, he and his sister Amelia, 18, are key members of staff at Reds Hair and Beauty, in Sunderland, where Susan was named the 2009 North-East Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing awards.
"I have always wanted to do something to raise money for Meningitis UK and this seemed the right time to do it," she says.
Hair and Beauty Benevolent is the charitable arm of the professional hair and beauty industries. When Susan heard about its latest fundraising event, a week-long cycle ride across Vietnam in south-east Asia, she knew she wanted to join the stylists, therapists and reps taking part.
"We saw people who had nothing, but appeared happy. The experience has completely changed my outlook on life," says Susan, who is aiming to raise £5,000.
