TODDLERS are soon to be hunting for bugs to help in the fight against meningitis as a unique fundraising initiative gets underway.
Meningitis UK is about to launch its Big Bug Hunt event, which targets the under-fives – the age group most at risk from the deadly disease.
The charity's urging nurseries and playgroups in the area to get involved this spring to help educate the youngsters and their parents while raising money towards vaccine research.
The Big Bug Hunt is designed to appeal to pre-school children's love of bugs and they will be able to take part in a variety of events and activities tailored to their abilities and interests.
Fun ideas include a sponsored bug hunt, fancy dress, a grid game, cooking bug cakes and colouring competitions.
Money raised from the Big Bug Hunt will go towards Meningitis UK's Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign which funds cutting-edge research to find a vaccine to eradicate all forms of the disease.
Emily Mitchard, the Big Bug Hunt Co-ordinator, said: "The Big Bug Hunt is really easy to organise and has been designed specifically to fit around the needs of playgroups and nurseries.
"Not only is it really fun, but there are also endless opportunities for learning, whether the children are counting bug's legs, painting and colouring or searching and exploring. It can also help to reach your Early Years Foundation Stage goals."
To give groups a head start on Cheeky Bug, the event's mascot, Meningitis UK has put together a free resource pack which includes Cheeky Bug stickers, tips on running your event, sponsorship forms, posters and details of how to win £100 worth of John Lewis vouchers.
All donations received before July 1 will be entered into a free prize draw to win a selection of Early Learning Centre toys, arts and crafts.
Emily added: "We'd like to see as many people join in as possible so if you are part of a nursery or pre-school group, why not get your little ones involved? You would be helping to raise vital awareness of the disease, plus it's a great deal of fun."
