Walkers inspired by Ryan's tragic death

07.06.11

A BRISTOL charity walk will be extra poignant for a Downend family who will be striding out in memory of their three-year-old son and brother.

The Johnson family prepare for the Summer StrollRyan Johnson was just three when he suddenly died from meningitis last year, sparking a massive fundraising drive by everyone whose lives were touched by the adorable toddler.

With almost £30,000 now raised in his memory for Bristol-based Meningitis UK, a group of 20 are preparing for the 13-mile Summer Stroll on Saturday, June 18.

Included in those stepping out will be Ryan's parents Sarah and Tyrone, plus his brothers Aaron and Cameron and sister Lydia.

Sarah urged people to get behind the event, which is in its sixth year and attracts around 200 people for a leisurely walk between Keynsham and Bristol.

She said: "It was a really lovely and enjoyable day last year, with lots of beautiful scenery and friendly people to speak to along the way.

"Everyone enjoyed it, even the young ones managed the full 13-miles as did several dogs.

"Not only is it a great day but it will hopefully raise around £20,000 for vital vaccine research which will potentially save thousands of lives."

Ryan became critically ill with meningococcal septicaemia, the blood poisoning form of the disease, hours after enjoying a day with his family.

It took hold rapidly and after being rushed to hospital, little Ryan slipped away just a day later.

Sarah, who works at Stepping Stones nursery in Speedwell, added: "Ryan touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. It's good that something positive is coming out of something so terrible.

"After losing Ryan we felt that a vaccine was the only thing which would have saved him, such was the speed at which he fell ill.

"Meningitis UK has been a great support to me and my family and the Summer Stroll's the ideal occasion for everyone to get behind such an important cause."

The Summer Stroll will follow a scenic 13mile route through Bristol's beautiful countryside and historic landmarks on Saturday, June 18.

It kicks off at the Lock Keeper pub in Keynsham at 9.30am before following the canal down the Avon walkway, through Hanham Lock and up around Broom Hill.

After going around the Conham River Park and through the Avon Valley Woodlands Nature Reserve, walkers will head towards Queen Square for a well-earned BBQ lunch.

The next stage will go to College Green, up Park Street, through Victoria Square and over the Suspension Bridge and through Ashton Court before finishing at Ashton Gate stadium.

There's still time to sign-up. For more information, call Laura Bullock on 0117 373 7373, e-mail laurabullock@meningitisuk.org or visit www.meningitisuk.org/summerstroll
