Walkers raise over £15,000 at Summer Stroll

20.06.11

INSPIRING walkers trekked through rain into sunshine to raise an impressive £15,097 on the Meningitis UK Summer Stroll between Keynsham and Ashton Gate.

Summer Stroll 2011 group shotMore than 190 walkers donned their walking boots for the 13-mile stroll on Saturday (June 18) which followed the River Avon before winding triumphantly through the centre of Bristol across the Suspension Bridge.

Among the walkers, many of whom were walking in memory of loved ones, Jenny Mitchell, 27, of Yatton stepped for Darren Evans who died this year aged 30.

The Yatton signwriter died the day after New Year's Day having been rushed to Weston General Hospital with bacterial meningitis.

Jenny Mitchell said after the walk: "It was a great day and I'm really glad we went. Josh and I picked up the walk from Queen Square after lunch and he walked the whole four and a half miles. It was nice to get together with other people in similar situations and do something positive in memory of Darren. Fundraising for Meningitis UK has given me a focus since Darren died and I think it's so important to keep working towards finding a vaccine."

Darren's workmates from Weston firm Eurosigns also took part in the charity's sixth annual walk along with members of his family.

Bristol's Lord Mayor Councillor Geoffrey Gollop met the group at lunchtime at the Hole in the Wall pub to offer support to the ramblers.

Meningitis UK fundraiser Laura Bullock said: "The Summer Stroll 2011 was a fantastic day for everyone and we are really proud of our supporters who braved the diverse weather conditions to complete the 13 mile walk and raised much-needed funds for Meningitis UK."

People either walked the first 8.5 mile stretch between Keynsham and Queen Street, the final 4.5 miles between Queen Square and Ashton Gate, or the full 13 miles for the Bristol-based charity.

Bristol and Avon Transport and Recycling was the main sponsor, with SWA and Wiltshire Farm Foods the associate sponsors.

An after party has been organised at the Tobacco Factory for August 18, where there will be a raffle and entertainment.
