"I have learnt more about meningitis in one morning, than in the 20 years since my son died."
Jenny Wilson, Meningitis UK Supporter and Open Day Attendee
On Friday 4th April 2008, Meningitis UK launched their first annual Friends' Open Day, attended by 140 people and supported by Novartis Vaccines.
At 10.30am, speakers began their presentations on meningitis, which was a fantastic opportunity for all our friends and supporters to hear about the science behind the search for a vaccine.
A buffet lunch followed, which allowed families to talk to our researchers, finding out more about the work being done to try to eliminate meningitis. Families also found it great help and support to chat to each other about their losses and what they were doing to cope.
Professor Mumtaz Virji very kindly supervised tours of the Spencer Dayman Meningitis Laboratories at the University of Bristol in the afternoon. Families were given a tour of the laboratories and an opportunity to view the Wall of Remembrance, which meant so much to so many people.
