People across the country urged to fundraise 4 Menigitis UK

Would-be fundraisers from across the country are being urged to put on their thinking caps and create imaginative ways of raising money for national charity Meningitis UK.

The charity is celebrating the first anniversary of its Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign on Friday 4th April - the fourth day of the fourth month - and is urging people to take up the 4 Hour Challenge on or around this day.

The one-off fundraiser aims to highlight the fact that meningitis can kill in under 4 hours and asks people to take 4 hours out of their day to help raise money towards the charity's research.

Emily Knight, Meningitis UK's Community Fundraising Officer, said: "This is a chance for people to get creative and come up with their own 4 hour idea, as well as get together with friends, colleagues and relatives and have some fun. What you choose can be as challenging or as easy as possible as long as it's to do with the number 4 and raises money for the charity.

"A few ideas that have been mentioned already include holding a raffle and charging £4 per row of tickets, holding a 4km fun-run, asking for donations for a 4-hour round of golf, and auctioning yourself (or even better your boss) for 4 hours! Everyone can take part - schools, nurseries, shops, pubs and businesses and if you haven't got 4 hours to spare on Friday 4th April, you can complete the challenge whenever suits you around that date."

Meningitis is the biggest infectious killer of children under the age of five in the UK and has the power to kill in under four hours. The Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign aims to raise £7million over the next seven years to fund vital research into developing a vaccine to eradicate meningitis.
